Line stops involve cutting into a pressurized pipe and temporarily inserting a removable plug for purposes of specific area water main isolation. They can be either single, working in conjunction with an existing valve, or double where two plugs are installed on each side of the area of pipe to be isolated.
Using line stops rather than relying on available valves in the lines can drastically reduce the amount of water main that has to be isolated. This helps minimize customer exposure to the shut off, and can significantly reduce the Utility’s work to restore the main to full service.
As a “Full Service” underground point specific service provider, Mueller Service Company technicians are fully equipped and trained to safely perform line stops. They excavate (including ‘call for locates’ and maintenance of road traffic), perform either a single or double line stop, then restore areas to pre-excavation condition.
Mueller Service Company can provide a total “turn-key” opportunity for the Utility that is short of sufficient staff or time. Optionally, Mueller Service Company can work in “partnership” with the Utility that opts to assist in the excavation, maintenance of traffic, or restoration of property/pavement.
Mueller Service Company works to develop a comprehensive plan that meets the needs of the Utility, which may include:
- Perform single line stop to isolate pipe in conjunction with an existing valve.
- Perform double line stop when an existing valve is not conveniently located near the work area.
